Clean a Couch Before Showings: Start With the Care Code
Check upholstery cleaning codes before treating a sofa. Choose compatible care, test cautiously and leave enough drying time before listing photos or showings.

Find the label before buying a cleaner
Look beneath the sofa or cushions for the care tag and record the model. A fabric that looks like another fabric may have different care requirements. If the label is missing, ask the manufacturer or an upholstery cleaner before applying liquid. A zipper on a cushion is not permission to machine-wash the cover.
Read the code as a limit
Ashley’s care guide distinguishes water-based care (W), solvent-based care (S), either approved spot-cleaning method (WS or SW), and vacuuming or light brushing only (X). These are not instructions to soak the upholstery. Follow the full tag and manufacturer directions for your piece. Ashley: upholstery care codes.
Leather, coated materials and specialty fabrics need their own instructions. A cleaner marketed for “furniture” is not automatically suitable for every surface.
Plan a small treatment, then reassess
- Remove loose objects and check cushions and seams for damage.
- Use a suitable upholstery attachment to lift crumbs and dust without dragging a hard edge across fabric.
- If spot treatment is permitted, choose the approved product and test a hidden location.
- Let the test dry completely and check for rings, color transfer or texture change.
- Treat only as directed. Stop if the fabric reacts or a stain spreads.
- Allow complete drying before replacing throws or scheduling use.
Do not experiment with an unfamiliar steam cleaner shortly before a showing. If the stain is extensive, seek a fabric-specific professional assessment and quote.
Choose presentation without hiding a problem
A washable throw can be cleaned according to its own label, but it does not solve moisture, odor or damaged upholstery beneath it. Compare the cost of appropriate cleaning with your plans for keeping the sofa; replacing furniture solely for a listing is not automatically worthwhile.
Before photos, straighten cushions and remove personal items. Keep an unobstructed route through the room. These are practical preparation choices, not evidence that visitors will sit on the couch or that cleaning will change the offer price.
Practical questions
Can I wash a removable cushion cover?
Only if its specific care instructions permit it. A removable cover may still be unsuitable for laundering.
What should I do with an X cleaning code?
Avoid water and solvent cleaners. Follow the manufacturer’s vacuuming or light-brushing instructions and ask a professional about unresolved stains.
