Review Light and Reflections Before Listing Photos
Look at how the room appears under its existing light before deciding to change a fixture, bulb or mirror.

Observe at the times the room is used
Take a note in daylight and another with the room’s usual lights on. Record what you notice rather than diagnosing a lighting problem: a work surface is hard for you to see, a bright reflection appears in a picture or two adjacent lamps look different in color.
For listing photography, share those observations with the photographer. Daylight, camera settings and the room’s finishes affect the image; a phone photograph is a useful record, not a technical lighting measurement.
Read a bulb label before choosing a replacement
The Department of Energy’s consumer lighting guide distinguishes lumens, which describe light output, from Kelvin, which describes light color. Wattage is not the same as brightness. There is no single bulb color specified here as the correct choice for every room or buyer.
If replacing a bulb, check the fixture and bulb manufacturers’ compatibility instructions, including any dimmer or enclosure requirements. Record the existing product details rather than buying by appearance alone. A fixture or wiring concern belongs with a qualified electrician, not this styling checklist.
Inspect what a mirror reflects
From the normal viewing positions, note whether the existing mirror reflects a doorway, a window, an opposite wall or a temporary pile of belongings. You may prefer to change what sits opposite it rather than move the mirror. There is no promise that a mirror will make a room feel larger to everyone.
Do not lean a heavy mirror somewhere new for a photograph or improvise its mounting. If relocation is worth considering, follow the product’s installation guidance and obtain suitable help. Keeping it where it is may be the simplest decision.
Review windows without replacing treatments
Use the treatments in their normal operating range and compare the room’s appearance. Decide whether opening them changes privacy or comfort for occupants before making that the default showing arrangement. A different arrangement may suit a photograph and daily use differently.
If an item does not work as intended, list the problem for evaluation. Changing the way it is photographed does not repair it. Avoid promising that a particular curtain height or fabric will change the home’s value.
Write a room-by-room observation sheet
- The time and lighting conditions you observed.
- The specific issue or preference, if any.
- The current bulb or fixture information if a replacement is considered.
- A reversible change to test before buying anything.
- A question for the photographer, manufacturer or qualified professional.
Give each proposed purchase a purpose. If you already like the room and the existing lighting works for its use, there may be nothing to change. For broader image review, use the listing-photo checklist.

Is one color temperature best for every listing?
This guide does not prescribe one. Compare the room’s appearance and use, and follow compatibility instructions for the actual fixture and bulb.
Are watts a measure of brightness?
No. Lumens describe light output. The Department of Energy’s consumer lighting guide explains the difference between output, energy use and light color.
Should I move a mirror to make a room look larger?
Not automatically. First review what it currently reflects. Relocation requires appropriate installation guidance and does not guarantee a particular visual response.
