A reliable commute budget starts with a date and a route

Transit fares, toll rules, parking eligibility and work schedules change. A generic statewide total can be wrong even for two neighbors: one may walk to a station, another may need a permit, and a hybrid worker may mix rail and driving. This guide therefore publishes no default fare. It gives you official places to look and a blank worksheet for the figures you find.

Record the source, date checked, origin, destination, payment method, ticket type and number of office days. If you are comparing towns, use the same work destination and the same schedule for each one.

Method and formulas

monthly transit = transit days × (fare + station parking + destination connection) + other monthly transit

monthly driving = driving days × (tolls + destination parking + fuel/charging) + other monthly driving

annual cash cost = 12 × (monthly transit + monthly driving) + annual fees

annual travel hours = 12 × [(transit days × transit round-trip minutes) + (driving days × driving round-trip minutes)] ÷ 60

The method assumes the entered month represents your year. For seasonal schedules, calculate separate months or use a spreadsheet. It excludes vehicle depreciation, maintenance, insurance, employer subsidies, pretax commuter benefits, tax effects and irregular trips unless you enter them in a stated line.

How to compare towns without distorting the result

Use the same office destination and work schedule.
Check whether parking is available to you, not just its posted price.
Record transfer and walking time door to door, including a realistic buffer.
